ABOUT Notios Dromos
Notios Dromos is a musical ensemble based in Chania, Crete, drawing inspiration from the rich musical tradition of all of Greece.
It is the road of memory, of roots, and of the soul. It is the musical path that brings us from the South — from Crete, the Aegean, the Peloponnese, Epirus, and all of Southern Greece — into the modern world, without forgetting where we started. A pathway that connects yesterday with today, through the melodies, rhythms, and stories of our land. We play traditional music not as something old, but as something alive, that continues to travel — along the Southern Road.
The Southern Road ensemble consists of 7 members and the following instruments: Violin, mainland Lute/Bouzouki, Cretan Lute, Guitar, Percussion, Double Bass, along with three voices in total, plus a sound engineer. The group is made up of musicians with many years of experience, performing at public events both in Crete and Athens, as well as at social gatherings.
Our repertoire includes traditional songs from Crete and various other regions of Greece. Cretan syrta, slow/fast pentozali, maleviziotis, kalamatiana, island songs, and tunes from Epirus, Macedonia, and Thrace shape a vibrant celebration for everyone, while we also incorporate subtle Laïko (popular Greek) elements — creating a lively and authentic musical journey.
Beloved traditional and popular melodies come alive again through Southern Road. We look forward to traveling together with you.
